Ernst says odds are against COVID ag aid before November election

A member of the Senate Agriculture Committee does not expect COVID relief for agriculture before the November election.

Joni Ernst is a Republican from Iowa.

“I’m going to place my money after the election and hope that I’m wrong.”

During the Women in Agribusiness virtual summit Thursday, Ernst said she was very disappointed a targeted package that included $20 billion in ag support was blocked last week on the Senate Floor.

“I had childcare initiatives and so many other types of initiatives within that bill. So we’re back to the drawing board, and hopefully between the House and Senate we can come together and just really focus on COVID recovery. That’s what this bill is supposed to be about.”

Ernst says as long as there’s a lot of extraneous policy being piled in, a coronavirus assistance bill won’t move very fast.
