Ernst says Congress needs to put pressure on Mexico

A U.S. Senator from Iowa says Mexico’s ban on genetically modified corn threatens American agriculture.

“It would be devastating if Mexico rejected all of our yellow corn.”

Republican Joni Ernst tells Brownfield the U.S. needs to hold Mexico accountable to its commitment under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“I think having increased pressure coming from the United States, and in particular from Congress, really does make a difference,” Ernst said. “We’re going to keep on that and hopefully we have good resolution.”

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorrecently said consultations continue under the USMCA, but suggested the country still plans to implement some form of the ban.

The Biden administration has said it will file a dispute settlement if a resolution can’t be reached.
