Equipment manufacturer says market for smaller farm equipment is developing

A global equipment manufacturer says demand for mid-size machinery is growing.

Greg Frenzel, product manage for combines with CLAAS, tells Brownfield the cost of large equipment is becoming too expensive for smaller farmers. “It’s always been bigger and better is the way to go with more performance through a machine with less machines in a field. That segment – the Class 7 segment – has been forgotten about a little bit.

He says CLAAS recently surveyed smaller farmers about their needs for farm equipment. “That was reliability, affordability and performance. The main thing was reliability.  They want something that works day-in and day out while being affordable.”

Frenzel says producers also said that larger equipment wasn’t economical for their farm size. “It’s a smaller operation.  They don’t have multiple guys working for them and it might be themselves or a couple of other guys managing the grain handling side and grain cart and running that tractor. It’s not the multiple combines, multiple operations.”

He says many farmers who operate Class 7 machinery can farm up to 3,000 acres.
