EPA reopens Pyrethroid comment period

The Environmental Protection Agency has reopened the comment period for reregistration of pyrethroids.

Pyrethroids are used in 120 different crops to control insects as well as in common household and garden products. EPA’s preliminary assessment says the insecticides used for agricultural purposes exceed acute and chronic levels of concern for aquatic animals, especially aquatic insects.

FMC and other members of the Pyrethroid Working Group have challenged the assessment and say EPA isn’t using the most up-to-date and accurate science available. They also argue EPA’s assessment left out management practices and label precautions that are used by farmers.

Public comments can be made on EPA’s website until July 7th.
