EPA refining approach to chemical risk evaluations

The EPA says it is refining its approach to selecting scientific studies used to inform chemical risk evaluations. The evaluations apply to any substances that could be toxic to humans or the environment including various agriculture products.

It’s developing a new Toxic Substances Control Act systematic review after the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine found EPA’s review system is lacking. The Academies recommend a detailed protocol to create a comprehensive systematic review.

The EPA says the review comes as part of the Biden-Harris commitment to use evidence-based policymaking.

The Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention says strengthening the information selection process will improve chemical safety, protecting human health and the environment.
