EPA proposes to narrow Pesticide Application Exclusion Zone

The EPA is proposing to narrow Pesticide Application Exclusion Zone (AEZ) requirements.

Administrator Andrew Wheeler says the targeted updates would make the regulations more effective and easier to implement.

The proposal modifies the AEZ so it is only enforceable on a farmer’s property.  Currently farmers are required to ensure individuals are outside the pesticide zone both on and off their property.

It would also exempt farm owners and their immediate family members from the requirement that they leave their home during certain pesticide applications.

American Farm Bureau president Zippy Duvall says the Federation welcomes EPA’s effort to refine and improve the application exclusion zone requirement.

EPA is accepting public comments on the proposed updates for 90 days once the proposal is published in the Federal Register.
