EPA approves sorghum oil for use in biodiesel

The EPA has approved sorghum oil as an eligible feedstock under the RFS, allowing for its expanded use in biodiesel and other advanced biofuels.

National Sorghum Producers CEO Tim Lust says the ruling helps level the playing field for ethanol plants extracting oil from sorghum.

“We have ethanol plants that used to use sorghum and they quit because they couldn’t sell their oil into biodiesel—and economically, it wasn’t worth it,” Lust says. “This ruling will allow those plants to come back into the grain sorghum market.”

Lust says nine ethanol producers are currently extracting oil from sorghum. He expects more plants to come on board because of the EPA’s action.
