Egg prices lower than expected ahead of Easter

Egg prices usually increase ahead of Easter, but a USDA livestock analyst says that isn’t the case this year.

“We’ve actually seen prices at wholesale coming down in the couple of weeks leading up to where we are right now.”

Shayle Shagam says egg prices are down dramatically.

“Last week, we saw an average bench mark New York large egg price of about 79 cents a dozen at wholesale. That compares to $2.67 a year ago.”

Shagam says that $1.88 difference is likely from last minute buying last season that drove the price up, but there are also more eggs available this year.

Table egg production for February was just under 7.5 billion eggs which he says was about 3.5% above a year ago.
