Effort underway to ‘revitalize’ Nebraska’s grain sorghum industry

Nate Blum, executive director of the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board

The executive director of the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board says he wants to help revitalize the sorghum industry in the state.

Nate Blum, who joined the board in February, says one of the keys to growth will be developing more sorghum processing.

“We’d love to see a popping sorghum facility, for example, in southwest Nebraska. We’d love to see a large industrial-sized mill for sorghum in central/western Nebraska,” Blum says. “We’d love to see bioplastics. We’d love to see some more of our pet food production here in the state, creating a line with sorghum in it.”

Blum says he would also like to see more grain sorghum used in ethanol production in Nebraska.

The Grain Sorghum Board is holding producer workshops at four locations this week–today in Nebraska City and Norfolk and Thursday in McCook and Kearney.
