Economist says the weather can change planting plans, prices

A University of Illinois ag economist says even more wet weather could have a greater impact on planting, yields, and prices later.  Todd Hubbs says, “It’s supposed to rain over a large swath of the corn belt again this week. The farther we stretch that corn planting out into late May and early June, it has definite implications for yield potential.”

Hubbs tells Brownfield some farmers are talking about changing their crop plans. “The specter of taking prevent plant comes up, so we could see some acreage reduction in corn and there’s been a lot of talk about switching between corn and soybeans and spring wheat and soybeans. I’ll have to see that to believe it.”

And, he says for corn, that might mean fewer acres and less yield, which should help corn prices.
