Early dig finding good results

Farmer members of the Michigan Sugar Company have started early digging for some sugarbeets.

Dennis Gardner tells Brownfield his farm was one of the first to harvest.

“Ground conditions were just about perfect, there was just enough moisture in there,” he says.  “The size of the beets was pretty good, the field I dug was probably going to average close to 30 ton, maybe a little bit over.”

He says while his region could use more moisture, most of the crops are too mature for it to impact yields.

“I’m thinking it’s going to be an early fall here just the way the weather’s going,” he says.

Gardner farms with his family in Croswell.
