Duffy supports farm bill safety net, House SNAP changes

Congressman Sean Duffy (R-WI 7th) addresses the Farm Bill Conference Committee

Congressman Sean Duffy told the Farm Bill Conference Committee Wednesday Wisconsin has the best ginseng and the most cranberry production, but dairy is incredibly important in his state.  “Making sure that we have a risk management program in place that actually is beneficial to our farmers, that we’re increasing coverage and we’re allowing some of our smaller farmers to purchase that coverage I think is important.”

Duffy also defended the House’s proposed changes to the SNAP nutrition program.  “If you fall on hard times, we have a program that’s going to help you.  If we have kids that can’t eat, we have a program that’s going to feed them.  All we’re recognizing here is that in America, we have help wanted signs here in every community and in every state.”

He says the House’s SNAP proposal doesn’t deny help to those who need it.  “We want to say listen if you’re an able-bodied adult, so you’re not a senior, not a kid, you’re not having a mental or physical disability and you don’t have little kids, you can’t sit at home and watch SportsCenter.”

Duffy also thanked the House and Senate members that recently repaired the failed Dairy Margin Protection Program.

Wednesday’s conference committee meeting was all opening statements with no debate or negotiation of the differences between the House and Senate bills.

Duffy hopes many of the House’s SNAP reforms make it to the final farm bill. “Let’s incentivize you to take one of those jobs in one of those small businesses or large businesses that have a help wanted sign in front of their door.  So hopefully, both chambers can work this out.  I don’t think we can be above compromise in working together, but I think this is a smart provision that we can find a unified approach on.”

  • It is imperative that a long term visa program be established for the dairy industry – 18 months is better but not long enough as it could take that long for a worker to become fully trained. Our workers need assurance that they are legally welcome, can leave the US and return in case of a family emergency or special occasion and have basic employee protection under our legal system. Citizenship should be available but under the same conditions available to other applicants. From a purely financial perspective why would we not want to know who All our dairy workers are, as well as all ag workers, so that all appropriate payroll taxes would have to be submitted by every employer rather than just those who follow the law. We need action on this soon, it is a bipartisan issue, the future of the dairy industry in Wisconsin does not look very good at this point. We all would appreciate a more aggressive attempt by Congressman Duffy to influence his fellow congressmen so as to correct this accelerating problem.

  • HI,
Trump helped GMO soy/corn…not good since they hurt people. Help organic/promote organic farms. Cranberries/ginseng/dairy need to be healthy. Dairy cows may eat GMO corn/GMO soy/ no exercise/maybe given antibiotics instead of sunlight.. Ban Factory farms/bad pesticides/chemicals/Roundup etc.. Ban Fracking that hurts water and may cause earthquakes/make businesses recycle and not pollute.
GMO corn/GMO soy/wheat hurt people. They may have Roundup on them. Grain free for people/pets may help them thrive. Gluten/GMO may hurt intestines so less nutrients absorb. GMO with Roundup may hurt. Gluten is wheat/barley/rye/oats/corn/rice. Many grains have Round up on them at harvest. Soy may block thyroid. Baby formula may have GMO corn/GMO soy and be 1/2 sugar…not healthy. Promote breast feeding. Stop forced vaccines at jobs/military/elderly/for school or college etc. Autism is rising fast due to vaccines/GMO/gluten/Roundup etc. Now they are giving vaccines to pregnant women.
Help restore nature/help natural help/help promote organic food for animals and people/help clean up and prevent pollution/help ban dangerous chemicals and forced things. Help promote natural ways to help health. Food needs to be healthy…not full of chemicals. Thank you for your awesome help! God bless!

  • Please grant the provision for RURAL TV BRODCASTING , as proposed by RFDTV. It seems that a required one percent Rural broadcasting is not enough- but it is a start
