Drought continues to stress Nebraska crops

Drought conditions continue to take a toll on Nebraska crops. 

USDA statistician Nicholas Streff says topsoil moisture is 46% very short and 35% short with only 19% of the cropland having adequate moisture.

Only 29% of Nebraska’s corn is in good condition,  with 27% in fair condition, and 34% in poor or very poor condition.  Eighty-nine percent of the corn is in the dough stage with 59% dented.

Thirty-four percent of the state’s soybeans are in good condition with 29% rated fair, and 28% of the beans in either poor or very poor condition.

Sixty percent of the sorghum crop is in poor or very poor condition, with 85% of the crop headed and 33% coloring.

Eighty-six percent of the dry edible beans are setting pods, but only 55% of the crop is in good condition with34% in fair condition.

Pastures and ranges remain in rough shape with 26% of them rated poor and 52% very poor.
