Drivers WANTED

The American Trucking Association says the need for truckers is at an all-time high.  More than 60,000 jobs went unfilled last year, and the chronic shortage could cause ripple effects across the economy.

Chief economist Bob Costello says shortages could expand to 100,000 over the next five years and 160,000 in the next decade, mostly for long-haul drivers.

The association says most drivers are aging out and a recent study found the trucking industry expects to hire more than one million drivers over the next decade to replace them and keep pace with the economy.

Some experts say the shortages are caused by poor pay, too much time away from home and the trucker lifestyle.
