Drive to Feed Kids aims to raise $250,000

The goal for the 2018 Drive to Feed Kids is to raise enough money to pack 100,000 kid-friendly meals at the Missouri State Fair.  The first Drive to Feed Kids last year raised almost $150,000, providing 9,000 pounds of food for Missouri children, according to Alan Wessler, chairman of Missouri Farmers Care, the organization that oversees the effort in Missouri.

“I think the message that resonated with folks is roughly one-in-five children, according to [the statewide food bank coalition] Feeding Missouri, are food insecure; they don’t know exactly where that next meal is coming from,” Wessler told Brownfield Ag News.  “Even worse, in rural Missouri that number is about one-in-three.”

Last year, FFA members completed about 50,000 back-pack meals in a day.  Wessler says this year’s goal is to double that.

“That says a lot about this opportunity for FFA kids to serve and to give back to their communities through a drive like this,” said Wessler.

This year’s goal, according to Wessler, is to raise $250,000 with 100 percent of the money going to feed Missouri children in need.  The Drive to Feed Kids culminates at the Missouri State Fair.
