Don’t forget early season weed control

MFA Incorporated’s Director of Agronomy Services says farmers should be thinking about early season weed control as spring fieldwork begins.

Doug Spaunhorst says herbicide resistant weeds like waterhemp are easier to control when the plants are small.

“If we can plan ahead and get that applied before the crop comes up, we can get a decent amount of weeds.”

He says after a pre-emergence herbicide application, farmers can come in three to four weeks later and apply a post emergent herbicide to catch any additional weeds.

“We’ll have waterhemp emerging later in the season: May, June or July so an additional batch can come up at anytime.”

Spaunhorst says waterhemp is one of the toughest weeds to control.
