Disease pressure builds in wet areas of the Corn Belt

Disease pressure continues to build in parts of the Corn Belt under stress from too much moisture.

Carolyn Zierke is an innovation specialist for BASF in southern Minnesota.

She says rain, heat, and humidity has spawned an array of diseases in corn and soybean fields.

“And growers really need to look and be proactive at protecting, specifically in corn, the top third of the plant.”

Zierke tells Brownfield a preventative fungicide now could pay off with bigger yields this fall.

“I would just make sure that guys are out there scouting, especially their corn fields, because a lot of these diseases can lead to another disease.”

She says northern corn leaf blight and gray leaf spot in corn, and Septoria brown spot in soybeans are the diseases she’s seeing the most of right now.
