Disappointment–and outrage–over EPA’s RFS waivers

The ag community continues to express its disappointment—and, in some cases, outrage—over the EPA’s RFS waivers.

Duane Aistrope, a farmer from Randolph, Iowa and chair of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board, calls it “a slap in the face”.

“I can’t believe that they done what they did,” Aistrope says. “It’s devastating to our market. That’s misplacing 2.6 billion gallons of ethanol. That’s over a million bushels of corn.”

Iowa ag secretary Mike Naig says it’s a blow to the ethanol industry, which is already reeling from low margins.

“Congress clearly intended for there to be a renewable fuels industry and that it would have support from a policy standpoint—and that it would grow,” Naig says. “When you grant these waivers, it’s letting that demand out the back door and it absolutely hurts an industry.”

The fact that President Trump is failing to uphold the RFS, as he has repeatedly promised to do, is very disappointing, Aistrope says.

“It’s time for the president to step up and stand to his word,” he says, “and get this whole thing figured out.”

Aistrope and Naig spoke with Brownfield Monday at the Iowa State Fair.
