Democrats, White House reach agreement on USMCA

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Democrats have reached a deal with President Trump on the US Mexico Canada Agreement.

Pelosi held a press conference with Chairman Richard Neal this morning.

“There is no question of course that this trade agreement is much better than NAFTA, but in terms of our work here it is infinitely better than what was initially proposed by the administration,” she says.

House Democrats have been seeking changes to labor and environmental standards. Chairman Richard Neal, the leader of the House Ways and Means Committee, calls USMCA a transformative agreement.

“It’s a template I believe for future agreements,” he says. “Our constant emphasis was on enforceability, enforceability, enforceability and we fixed that.”

President Trump tweeted this morning that the agreement is looking good and will benefit both farmers and manufacturers.

Trade officials from the three countries are expected to meet in Mexico City today.
