Deering confident meat label law will prevail

The legal challenge over Missouri’s meat labeling law passed in 2018 will go to court and the head of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association says  they’re confident they will prevail.

Mike Deering tells Brownfield several attempts at mediation with Tofurkey and others who brought the lawsuit have failed, “I don’t know how I could feel more confident that we’re going to win this at the end of the day. We did not put this legislation together willy nilly. We knew we were going to be challenged.”

The state law says products that are not “meat” cannot claim to be meat on their labels and the challengers say that is unconstitutional…

“So we made sure that we had a lock solid piece of legislation on file and we had that. We feel very confident that the Attorney General’s office is going to make sure that this legislation is put forward.”

Earlier this month, a federal judge declined to block the state labeling law.
