Dairy products likely to find buyers amid rising food prices

An ag economist says consumer pushback from rising food costs is less likely to impact a few key protein staples.

Tanner Ehmke with CoBank tells Brownfield there are some grocery items that will stay in carts.

“It’s harder to push back on those staples when they’re, on a dollar per calorie level, still very affordable, things like eggs and cheese,” he says.

But for more indulgent proteins like beef, ice cream, and yogurt, “Something like that would probably be cut from the household budget,” he says.

Ehmke adds cheese prices in the U.S. are much better than global markets and dairy will have no trouble finding a buyer if American consumers decide it’s too expensive.
