Dairy product production slows

Dairy product production was mixed during October with inventories remaining heavy.

Total cheese production was 1.15 billion pounds, up nearly one percent on the year and from the prior month. Italian cheese production was up 3.5 percent on the year and slightly on the month while American cheese was slightly down on year but up two percent from September.


Butter production totaled 159 million pounds, down nearly two percent from the prior year but up more than 11 percent from last month.


Nonfat dry milk was down nearly 12 percent from 2020 and skim milk powder was down nearly eight percent.  Dry whey production was up four percent while lactose was up nearly 12 percent from the previous year.
