Dairy product production shows modest growth

The USDA says October dairy product production was mostly up on the year, from added processing capacity, while declines were reported for skim milk powder. Butter production drags on the year but did show a rebound from September.

Total cheese production totaled more than 1.17 billion pounds, up more than one percent on the year and two percent on the month. Italian cheese production was up more than one percent on the year and fractionally on the month while American cheese was up more than one percent on the year and nearly six percent for the month.

Butter production totaled 161 million pounds, down two percent from the prior year but up more than 14 percent from the last month.

Nonfat dry milk was up nearly three percent from 2021 while skim milk powder was down nearly 28 percent. Dry whey production was up more than three percent while lactose was up nearly one percent on the year.
