Dairy product production sees slight increases

The USDA says November dairy product production was mostly up on the year, from added processing capacity, while declines were reported for dry milk powder.

Total cheese production totaled more than 1.15 billion pounds, up more than one percent on the year but down nearly two percent on the month. Italian cheese production was up more than one percent on the year but down more than two percent on the month while American cheese was up two percent on the year and down two percent for the month.

Butter production totaled 170 million pounds, up nearly nine percent from the prior year and five percent from the last month.

Nonfat dry milk was down one percent from 2021 while skim milk powder was down nearly 34 percent. Dry whey production was down nearly three percent while lactose was up almost three percent on the year.
