DAIRY PRIDE Act takes 2 in Congress

A group of bipartisan lawmakers are reintroducing the DAIRY PRIDE Act in Congress to address the mislabeling of non-dairy products.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, tells Brownfield the FDA is supposed to enforce current regulations which define milk and the bill asks the agency to do its job. “When we have rampant mislabeling it really hurts an industry that is already under tremendous stress for a variety of reasons.”

The DAIRY PRIDE Act would require the FDA to create a nationwide enforcement of mislabeled imitation dairy products within 90 days and require the FDA to report to Congress two years after enactment to hold the agency accountable.

A bipartisan companion bill has also been introduced in the House.

The measure is supported by numerous dairy groups including the National Milk Producers Federation, National Farmers Union, Midwest Dairy Coalition and Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative.
