Dairy herds and milk production growing

Milk production during October was again higher on the month as producers keep adding cows.

USDA says production in the U.S. was up slightly more than two percent compared last year at 18.6 billion pounds with production per cow up 37 pounds from last year.

The herd size was up 43,000 head on the year and 14,000 from last month.

Michigan continues to have the most productive cows in the nation. Vermont and Utah had the largest decrease in milk production while South Dakota was up nearly 13 percent, followed by Indiana, up nearly 11 percent, Texas, and Illinois.
