Dairy groups call on Congress to pass farm bill

A lobbyist for the dairy industry says he hopes the 2018 Farm Bill is passed by the first week of December.

“My personal hope is that they’re able to resolve it before government funding runs out on December 7th because if we get caught up in that, I’m not so sure what’s going to happen.”

Michael Torrey with Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative tells Brownfield dairy has been a sticking point in past farm bills but that’s not the case this year.  “That wasn’t necessarily the case this year.  The producers and the processors, for the most part, found some agreement.”

Speaking with Brownfield during the recent NAFB Convention in Kansas City, Torrey says he believes immigration reform will take place next year or the year following and is also focusing on trade resolutions needed for dairy farmers.

The National Milk Producers Federation is also urging Congress to pass the farm bill during the lame-duck session.
