Dairy exports remain solidly above 2019

The U.S. Dairy Export Council says exports continue to pace higher on the year and the month.

July export volumes were 22 percent higher than 2019, totaling more than 196,000 tons, with values up 22 percent to more than $554 million. 

Sales for the first seven months of 2020 were up 16 percent in volume and 14 percent in value.  Increased exports on nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder to Southeast Asia, which were up 150% for July, and whey products to China are credited for the increase.

Cheese exports pulled back from the previous month’s record but were still up five percent on the year even with U.S. prices above the global market.

Nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder exports were up 52 percent from last year with shipments to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam more than tripling. 

Whey exports were 30 percent higher than 2019 and whey protein isolates were up 48 percent.

Shipments of lactose were down 11 percent while fluid milk exports were 14 percent higher.

Other gains were seen in milk protein concentrate (+34%), butterfat (a 17-month high), and food prep/blends (+1%) while whole milk powder (-11%) exports were down again in July.
