Dairy cooperative says nutrition guidelines “missed an opportunity”

The president of one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the U.S. says the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans report recognized the importance of dairy but missed a huge opportunity.

Brody Stapel with Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative says unfortunately, the agencies and scientific review committee failed to address and include newer, available science on the nutritional benefits from fuller-fat dairy and a wider array of products.  He says the guidelines direct what nutrition and school meal programs do, and the lack of recognizing the benefits of fuller-fat dairy will continue to hinder the availability of these food options in schools.

Staple says the cooperative is calling on Congress to support the efforts to broaden the flexibility for milk allowed in the school lunch program.
