Current Brexit plan “no good” for U.S. farmers

British leaders say the Brexit plan released this week would not help American farmers gain access to their markets.

David Davis of Britain’s Conservative Party is the former Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.  He told Agri-Pulse the Brexit proposal would not allow the U.K. to control their own regulations or tariffs, meaning they would not be able to negotiate their own free trade agreements.

That means the U.K would be out of the European Union but still bound by European customs rules, with no change for tariffs, sanitary, and scientific regulations that currently block almost all U.S. products including pork and chicken.

Prime Minister Theresa May is trying to send a Brexit deal to Parliament by mid-January as the U.K. pushes towards a March 29th exit from the European Union.
