Crops need time to finish

An agronomist based in southern Minnesota fears most crops in his area won’t finish if a frost occurs this week.

Dan Kohler with Asgrow/Dekalb says a challenging spring limited the acres planted in April and early May.

“I’m not one to predict weather, but if we were to get a frost this week we would be hurting the yield potential of those acres that were planted towards the later part of May and into June.”

He tells Brownfield crops planted before that appear to be reaching maturity.

“The (fields) that were better tiled, probably higher fertility (and) got planted in late April and first couple weeks of May are going to be fine.”

Kohler says in south-central Minnesota there was good harvest activity on soybeans until rains moved in earlier this week.
