Crop insurance reward program supports cover crops

The recently approved Illinois budget includes funding for a crop insurance reward program highlighting cover crops.

“Farmers who have crop insurance and also plant cover crops will be eligible for a $5 reward off of their crop insurance bill next year.”

Kris Reynolds with American Farmland Trust tells Brownfield the goal of the program is to promote conservation cropping systems as part of the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy.

“It recognizes cover crops as a risk reduction tool that helps protect cropland from adverse weather conditions.”

Reynolds says the $5 per acre rewards will come through the Risk Management Agency as a reduction on crop insurance bills next fall.

Eligible farmers are those who are not currently in an existing state or federal cost share incentive program. Applications for the program will open this fall.

The program will be run by the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
