COVID spurring fresh Christmas tree demand

Christmas tree growers are expecting the ongoing pandemic to spur added demand.

“We are prepared for a very big year!”

Christmas Tree Promotion Board Executive Director Marsha Grey tells Brownfield they believe demand seen at farmers markets for local, fresh products will remain strong for real Christmas trees.

“The fact that these sales, such as at farmers markets, pumpkins, Christmas trees, have been outside makes them feel a little more confident and they like that outdoor activity.”

Grey’s number one tip for real trees is to make a fresh cut on the bottom, “That opens the tree up so it can absorb water, and then get the tree home in water immediately,” she says. “And keep it watered throughout the season.”

She says the industry has also created guidelines to help consumers feel comfortable shopping and stay safe during the pandemic.
