COVID shows the U.S. is a nation of meat eaters

A University of Missouri meat specialist says the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that consumers want meat.

“If COVID has shown me anything, we are still a nation of meat eaters. We saw some prices that got pushed pretty high and consumers put their dollars there and tried really hard to get a hold of those red meats and poultry products.”

Bryon Wiegand is also the technical advisor for the Missouri Association of Meat Processors. He says members were slammed with business when the supply chain was disrupted by the pandemic and while he’s hopeful the unique and new customers that turned to smaller processors will stay with them – he’s a realist, “As the wrinkle in the supply works itself out and supply increases the price will go down. And, I’m afraid that when ground beef is two-dollars and something a pound some of those consumers will abandon these small businesses again.”

Wiegand was a speaker on the recent webinar hosted by the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City.
