COVID Online food sales starting to plateau

An agricultural economist says growth in online food sales directly from producers and grocery stores is slowing down.

Colorado State’s Becca Jablonski tells Brownfield COVID-19 led to a boom in online food sales.

“We’ve seen a lot of producers develop online platforms and these innovative, direct distribution systems that were, virtually, created overnight,” she said.

Jablonski said while online sales for items like cereal might continue to grow, producers should expect other products to plateau.

“Consumers do care about being able to see and smell, tastes [and] touch produce, meet, certain dairy items before they make some of those purchases,” she said.

Jablonski said online food sales are a small portion of the market, even amid the pandemic.
