Cottonseed production up in 2021

Cottonseed production climbed higher in 2021.

The USDA says 5.323 million tons of cottonseed were produced, up 855,000 from 2020, with 2.521 million tons sold to oil mills, 69,400 used for planting, and 2.802 million tons used for other purposes, including exports, feed use, and inter-farm sales.

Upland cotton production was 17.191 million bales last year, an increase of more than 3 million from the previous year.

Comparisons for applicable Brownfield states:

Arkansas: Production: 390,000 tons, compared to 402,000 in 2020; Sales to oil mills: 291,000 tons, compared to 292,000 a year ago; Other purposes: 99,000 tons, compared to 110,000 last year; Seed for planting: 3.3 million tons, up 300,000 on the year

Kansas: Production: 57,000 tons, compared to 99,000 in 2020; Sales to oil mills: 0; Other purposes: 57,000 tons, compared to 99,000 last year; Seed for planting: 600 tons, down 400 on the year

Missouri: Production: 245,000 tons, compared to 210,000 in 2020; Sales to oil mills: 133,000 tons, compared to 52,000 a year ago; Other purposes: 112,000 tons, compared to 158,000 last year; Seed for planting: 2.1 million tons, unchanged on the year

Tennessee: Production: 183,000 tons, compared to 186,000 in 2020; Sales to oil mills: 156,000 tons, compared to 108,000 a year ago; Other purposes: 27,000 tons, compared to 78,000 last year; Seed for planting: 2.1 million tons, up 200,000 on the year
