Cost of production challenges pork industry

Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture says hog farmers across the country face a list of challenges.

Mike Naig says there’s some uncertainty for the pork industry in 2023.

“We have rising interest rates and the impact of inflation,” he said. “What’s happening from a consumer standpoint in terms of purchasing habits because of food inflation? Those are some pressures that are on us, including high input costs.”

But he tells Brownfield… “As long as you’ve got high input costs that are met with high market prices and high demand, then I think you can make that work,” Naig said. “I think that’s the situation we’re in today.”

Naig says trade missions will be key to help expand pork export market opportunities.
