Corn producers are tightening their belts again

Nicole Wagner with the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association tells Brownfield their farmer members are not making any drastic changes to their 2018 corn acres, but they are trying to cut costs.  “This year it’s interesting.  Some aren’t making any changes on acres, but they are making changes on the practices that they’re going to use this summer and maybe not put as much fertilizer or other chemicals out in the field.”

She says with commodity prices so low, it’s all about trying to stay out of the red.  “A lot of them barely broke even last year.  I’m sure some of them didn’t break even, so they just want to make sure they can get a crop and can make some money.”

Wagner talked to Brownfield at the recent WPS Farm Show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
