Corn Growers pushing biofuels as Minnesota Legislature convenes

Promoting the use of biofuels is the top legislative priority for the Minnesota Corn Growers.

MCGA president Brian Thalmann tells Brownfield the Association is looking forward to working with legislators and Governor Walz on the Better Fuels Initiative.

“Our goal is for Minnesota to become the first state in the nation where E15 becomes the new standard fuel. Just like Minnesota was the leader twenty-some years ago in getting the 10 percent ethanol standard in place.”

He says the Initiative meshes with the state’s Petroleum Replacement statute.

“Currently, the state is not quite on target to meet the targets as they’re set for the next couple years. So we’re looking at 25 to 30 percent of the petroleum to be replaced, and biofuels are the best way to do that.”

Thalmann says the Better Fuels Initiative also calls for increasing awareness around biofuels, and promotes efforts to increase accessibility of higher ethanol blends.

The 2020 Minnesota Legislative Session begins this week.
