Corn and soybean harvest one-quarter complete in Illinois

Illinois farmers entered the first week of October with one-quarter of both corn and soybean harvest complete.

The USDA reports as of Sunday 26% of corn is harvested, doubling progress from the previous week, but still behind the five-year average of 39%. 89% of the crop is considered mature with 73% rated good to excellent.

Soybean harvest reached 25%, up from 11% the previous but also behind the average of 33%. 81% of the crop is dropping leaves with 75% rated good to excellent.

Winter wheat planting is also well underway with 29% in the ground ahead of the 16% average with 9% of the crop emerged.

Statewide temperatures averaged 53 degrees last week, nearly 8 degrees below normal, but are expected to warm back up this week in many areas.
