Consistent reports of good soybean yields and inconsistent corn

A southeast Minnesota farmer is echoing harvest reports from across the state with very good soybean yields and extreme variability in corn.

Keith Schrader of Nerstrand says August rains really benefited his beans.

“(yield) Ranges anywhere from 55 to 70 bushels per acre.”

He tells Brownfield the use of fungicides also pushed soybean yields higher.

Some of Schrader’s corn suffered wind damage during the growing season, resulting in a wide range of production.

“We lost stand, so we were anywhere from 170 to well over 200 (bushels per acre) on land that didn’t have wind damage.”

Schrader is finished harvesting soybeans, and continues to deal with the aftermath of the July wind storm while trying to get his remaining corn acres out.

“We had a lot of broken stalks in our area.  We have some land farther south of us that stood well.  So we actually haven’t had stand loss but have had goose-necking.  But it seems to be holding up pretty well.”

Mankato-based South Central College farm management instructor Wayne Schoper says the majority of farmers in southern Minnesota are reporting better-than-expected soybean yields and an inconsistent corn crop.
