Conservation and Innovative Climate Partnership Act introduced in U.S. Senate

Bipartisan legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate would beef up university resources so extension staff can better assist farmers adopting conservation practices.

Minnesota Democrat Tina Smith and Indiana Republican Todd Young co-authored the Conservation and Innovative Climate Partnership Act.

Smith tells Brownfield the legislation is all about getting tools into the hands of farmers and ranchers.

“It provides support to university extension services that would allow those universities to provide direct one-on-one technical assistance and support to farmers.”

She says that includes the latest research and ideas producers could implement on their farms.

The Act would establish a competitive grant program that universities would apply for.

“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. You want to make sure that extension services are motivated to do this, that they see the benefit of it. I certainly see the benefit of it, and I think a lot of Minnesota farmers will too.”

Smith says she and Senator Young will be working on the bill through the Agriculture Committee and they hope to see it marked up later this year.
