Winter wheat harvest began in parts of Illinois last week as farmers put the finishing touches on corn and soybean planting.

The USDA reports as of Sunday 3% of the crop was harvested compared to the five-year average of 15%. Warm, dry weather in key wheat growing areas of the state this week should increase the amount of harvest-ready acres. Illinois wheat is rated 60% good to excellent.

Corn emergence jumped to 96%, 4 points ahead of average. Illinois corn is rated 63% good to excellent.

Soybean planting reached 94% with 84% of the crop emerged, both ahead of average. Illinois soybeans are rated 64% good to excellent.

Eighty-eight percent of the first cutting of alfalfa hay has also been harvested.
