Cochran to resign from Senate

US Senator Thad Cochran has announced he will resign from the Senate on April 1.

Cochran, the Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, says his health has been an ongoing challenge, but he will stay in his role through the 2018 appropriations cycle.

The Mississippi native, who is also on the Senate Ag Committee, says he is making the announcement now so there is a smooth transition.

Cochran was elected to the Senate in 1978 and is the tenth-longest serving Senator in US history.
