Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers launches Derecho windbreak grant program

Trees used as windbreaks account for some of the many losses sustained by Iowa farmers during the August derecho.

And now the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers wants to help those impacted with a new grant program.  Executive director Brian Waddingham tells Brownfield it’s available to any livestock producer who lost or had damage to windbreaks during the storm.

“Go to our website and there’s an online application they can fill out. It’s very simple and very straightforward, just about what type of livestock you raise, the trees that you lost. Tell us a little bit about the species and how many.”

He says a committee will review the applications and the Coalition will notify farmers by March 15th.

“And the other part of this too is we’re always looking for funds to distribute to these livestock farmers, so if you’re a business or company that would like to make a donation please give me a call.”

Waddingham says the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers is a joint partnership funded by Iowa’s nine major farm and commodity groups with the sole mission of assisting livestock farmers to make responsible decisions when adding livestock or when beginning a livestock farm.
