Coalition asks Congress to support infrastructure, rural communities

The Rebuild Rural Infrastructure Coalition is asking Congressional leaders to include provisions to strengthen the nation’s infrastructure in the next relief package.

The coalition, made up of more than 250 organizations, says it is critical to ensure that rural communities have access to broadband, healthcare, dependable surface transportation, reliable and affordable power, housing, and clean and safe drinking water and wastewater facilities.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the coalition says rural communities play a critical role in the nation’s economy and are home to many in manufacturing and agricultural production.

The groups write that the ability to meet supply chain demands depends on “robust and reliable transportation infrastructure including roads, inland waterways, ports, and railways.

The Rebuild Rural Infrastructure Coalition says any future legislation addressing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic should address the infrastructure needs of the country.
