Chinese pork production continues to struggle

China’s pork output in the first quarter of 2020 was down 29 percent from a year ago as the country continues to feel the impact of African swine fever.

According to data from the Chinese government, China’s total meat output in the first quarter, including pork beef, lamb and poultry down 20 percent from last year.

Some analysts think those percentages could be even higher than their government is reporting.

Meanwhile, China is importing pork at record levels. Imports in the first quarter were close to one million tons, nearly double last year’s level.
