China-Australia trade tensions continue to escalate

Trade tensions between Australia and China continue to escalate.

The latest skirmish involves wine. China has imposed tariffs of up to 212 percent on Australian wine, accusing that country of unfairly using subsidies to increase its exports.

Earlier, China stopped or reduced imports of Australian beef, barley, seafood, sugar and timber after Australia supported calls for a probe into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

Australia says it plans to appeal the barley decision to the WTO.

China is Australia’s top market for agricultural exports.
