China approves two new GMO crops
In what could be another sign of improving relations, China has approved a genetically modified soybean variety developed by Corteva Agriscience.
China also approved a new type of GMO papaya and renewed permits for 10 crop varieties, including corn and canola.
The U.S. has demanded for years that China change its approval process for GMO crops to make it more transparent, timely and based on scientific methods. Analysts said the announcement on Monday might indicate that the Chinese are serious about removing non-tariff trade barriers.
The move follows earlier reports on Monday that a Chinese delegation will travel to Washington this week to sign the phase one trade agreement negotiated by the two countries.
