Cheese and whey push exports higher, ports overhang NFDM

The U.S. Dairy Export Council says strong demand for cheese and whey continued to drive exports during July which experienced the sixth straight month of growth.

Dairy exports during July were up seven percent in volume and 20 percent in value which totaled nearly $668 million.

Cheese sales increased 27 percent for the month to a new record high with exports to Central America more than doubling, to South America up 70 percent, and to Japan up 66 percent.

Whey exports in July were up 18 percent with multiple counties increasing demand for other types of whey like permeate.

The Export Council says port congestion issues in July increased likely causing nonfat dry milk and skim milk powder export declines as more than 60 percent of it is shipped through California ports.  Containers shipped out of California ports were the lowest in more than a decade.
